Center Graduate Students: Bruce Kovanen
Bruce Kovanen is an PhD student in the Center for Writing Studies and the English Department at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Bruce Kovanen hails from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. He attended Knox College where he graduated with a BA in Psychology and honors in Composition and Rhetoric. As a student at Knox, Bruce developed a strong interest in writing studies while working as a writing consultant in Knox’s writing center and as a GED tutor in the Carl Sandburg Adult Learning Center. During his time at Knox, Bruce completed a year-long research project examining Knox’s First-Year Preceptorial program using archival sources, focus groups, and writing surveys. He also served on the CCCC Working Group tasked with revising the CCCC Guidelines for the Ethical Conduct of Research in Composition Studies. His current work focuses on the relations between writing and gesture.
