Date: October 18, 2001
Each year an increasing number of English as Second Language student enter US colleges and universities. Many of these students are not familiar with writing in a US academic setting. In order for these students to learn how to write in this setting, most US colleges and universties offer ESL composition classes. In addition, on many campuses there are writing centers where students can go for help with their papers.
This research project focuses on two ESL composition teachers and two writing center tutors at different large research universities in the Midwest. Hall discusses her findings about how participants taught writing to ESL students and if and to what degree their own educational background and previous job experience(s) played a role in what these instructors and tutors do in the classroom and writing center.
