Presentation Title: “Storytelling in the Digital Age: Narrative and Data”
Date: April 7, 2005
Abstract
As we plunge deeper into the datasphere, narrative no longer seems a plausible way in which to understand global events. Narrative is becoming, as it were, “infected” by data. And yet narrative remains an essential way in which to make sense of the actions and minds of other people. Consequently, new literary forms are emerging that combine narrative and data to create stories that are not exactly narratives but still retain the legendary fascination of storytelling. A theoretical framework will be proposed for revising narrative theory and examples of this new kind of storytelling will be explored.
