Abstract
Harriet Malinowitz presents a discussion of marketplace exigencies, the purposes of humanistic education, escalating clashes between these in the lives of students and faculty (and embodied in the evolving shape of, and rationales for, the English curriculum in the 21st century), and the personal essay as an emerging genre whose popularity and utility may be traced to (among other things) all of the above.
