Name: Lev Manovich, University of California, San Diego
Presentation Title: "Media, New Media, and Metamedia"
Date: April 20, 2006
In his talk Lev Manovich will present his new map of the evolution of digital culture until now and suggest what may come next. The talk will be illustrated by examples drawn from a variety of fields, including digital art, motion graphics, architecture, and vernacular computing. Manovich argues that following the first stage of new media (1960s-1990s) when most physical media were simulated in a computer and a variety of new media were invented, we have now entered the second stage. This is the stage of remixability: not only of the content of different media or simply their aesthetics, but their fundamental techniques, working methods, and assumptions. Manovich will discuss how we can begin to approach the new situation theoretically and start mapping various remix strategies and new hybrid media species.
