Name: Bonnie Nardi, Design Anthropologist at AT&T Labs
Presentation Title: "netWORK"
Date: April 20, 2000
Abstract
Nardi presents ethnographic research on personal social networks in the workplace, emphasizing the invisible work of keeping up social relations in today's economy--what she calls "netWORK." Because the new economy is in constant flux, there are fewer stable institutional resources for workers to draw on, and more reliance on workers' own resources for labor recruitment, information gathering, and career development. Media choice decisions, device integration, and contact management are time-consuming tasks associated with netWORK. Nardi describes the software project her team is working on, ContactMap, that meets the needs uncovered in the research.
