Name: James Porter, Purdue University
Presentation Title: "Critical Rhetoric, Public Policy, and Business Development of the World Wide Web"
Date: April 10, 1997
Abstract
In this project, Porter examines business uses of the World Wide Web to determine how the web should be taught in Business Communication courses. Developments on the web suggest that the WWW should be taught--but Porter takes up the question of how: for what purposes and ends related to the education of students and the betterment of society? Porter approaches his analysis from a critical frame that takes into account the kinds of rhetorical and ethical relations promoted (and discouraged) by web design; he also considers public policy issues related to development of the web (especially intellectual property issues).
