Name: David Russell, Iowa State University
Presentation Title: "Writing Cannot be Taught, Only Genres: WAC and the Humanities Myth"
Date: February 16, 1993
Abstract
Russell argues that academic discourse and public discourse are not confined to any discrete set of genres, styles, or registers--much less to the particular genres, styles, or registers of professional humanists in academia, in which most writing instructors are trained. Academic and public discourse are instead aggregates of dynamic, interacting discourses that constitute academic institutions and civil society.
