Presentation Title: "Responding to the Unexpected: What Happens When We Read Students' Writing?"
Date: October 31, 1997
Abstract
What happens when a student strays from the path we have laid out in a writing assignment? How willing are we to tolerate student work that grates against our beliefs and personal morality? How are we affected by certain kinds of errors in students' writing--and are we affected the same way with different writers? In this workshop, we will work through a series of engaging cases that raise important questions about what happens when we read students' writing. Through analysis of the complexity that reading student writing inevitably calls into play, we can collectively invent some useful strategies for managing this difficult and time-consuming task--fairly, efficiently, and helpfully.
