Presentation Title: "The Codex, the Pictograph, and the Letter: Chicana/o Scripts for the 21st Century"
Date: September 10, 2009
This presentation examines contemporary codex production and the strategic weaving of Aztec and Western writing systems. I suggest that the powerful aesthetic of placing oneself at the cross-roads between Iberian, Nahuatl, and Anglo-American inscription practices makes possible an invention of different ways of knowing and writing, where the pre-Columbian past meets the global American present. Material for this talk is from Baca's book, Mestiz@ Scripts, Digital Migrations, and the Territories of Writing (2008) and Rhetorics of the Americas: 3114BCE to 2012CE (Palgrave Macmillan, forthcoming).
