Writers Workshop: Writer Resources
Personal communications, like unpublished interviews, memos, letters, telephone conversations, etc., do not need to be listed in a references page, because they do not provide recoverable data. Simply cite the information in the text of your document, according to the following format:
- (C. Jones, personal communication, June 6, 2007)
Here the entry consists of the first initial and last name of the letter writer, the words "personal communication," and the date.
For more specific information, consult the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (Fifth Edition) or see the APA style website.
